The Chick Rose School of Bluegrass, otherwise known as “Chick’s Kids,” is a music education program dedicated to sharing the fun of bluegrass with youth.

Where kids learn bluegrass... for free!

The Chick Rose School of Bluegrass offers jams, camps and workshops designed to engage kids in a friendly, fun and supportive environment. Participants generally range in age from 8 to 18.

If you have kids who might enjoy playing music with friends and learning the art of bluegrass, we'd love to hear from you.

Jams are usually held on the second Sunday of the month, unless we have a workshop at a festival. We hole up on a ranch in Sherwood, Oregon, for two days. (Perfect for pickin’!) The camp is a great introduction to bluegrass for beginners. We hold workshops at various regional bluegrass festivals throughout the year.

The Chick Rose School of Bluegrass was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s “Art Beat” back in 2007. Watch the video to see some of Chick’s Kids at the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival that year.

About Chick Rose

Chick Rose loved how bluegrass brought people and music together, and he also loved kids. Chick started his program in 1992, and over the years he taught and mentored more than 1,000 students in the art and performance of bluegrass. (Check out The Bluegrass Regulators or Dan Crary's Thunderation, or the teens Top String or Wild Rose Trail, and you will see some amazing musicians who were Chick's kids—and are now our instructors!) After Chick passed away in 2011, OBA created Chick's Kids in his memory. Chick once summed it up: "Preach fundamentals, but teach fun!" We couldn't agree more.
