The Oregon Mandolin Orchestra will perform a heart-warming program of Yuletide favorites, as well as enduring classics by Antonio Vivaldi and Franz Schubert, during its annual Holiday Concert Friday, Dec. 8, in Hillsboro.
The orchestra also will feature special guests Caravan Gogh (https://www.facebook.com/CaravanGogh/), known for original music ranging from gypsy waltzes to acoustic rock and calypso-inspired dance tunes.
Founded in 2010, the Portland-based orchestra has successfully revived the tradition of mandolin ensembles popular during the early 20th century. Today, the orchestra boasts nearly 30 members who play mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass to create a warm, distinctive sound.
The 2017 Holiday Concert will mark a big change for the orchestra. Brian Oberlin, co-founder and music director emeritus, will conduct the first part of the program and perform with Caravan Gogh. Christian McKee, the orchestra’s director since April, will take the baton for the program’s second part.
